The London English Song Festival presents this special educational matinee for children from local secondary schools. Songs of the Somme commemorates the 100th anniversary of the battle of the Somme, engaging children with the artistic legacy of the war poets and composers through immersive live performance and discussion.

The film footage used in the festival has been selected in partnership with the Imperial War Museum, and frames a staged dramatic performance given by three of the finest singers of their generation:
Mezzo-Soprano Katie Bray
Tenor Nicky Spence
Baritone Nicholas Merryweather

The singers will be accompanied by William Vann, Artistic Director of the London English Song Festival and award-winning pianist.

This matinee will be a modified version of the full Songs of the Somme programme being presented on the evenings of 11th to 13th July. It will include an introductory talk and an interactive question and answer session and will last approximately 50 minutes.

The First World War features throughout the UK history curriculum, whilst the poetry and texts used are appropriate for exploration in English literature lessons for both Key Stages 3 and 4. Additionally, the 20th century British song featured in the performance would complement GCSE and A-level studies of musical and thematic analysis.
