Classical Pride: Voices from the Edge

A night at the opera, but not as you know it. While the thrills and spills of the decadent genre will be on full display in this production, leave the dressing up to the professionals and behold two bite-sized operas that push the boundaries of the human voice.

Caroline Shaw became the youngest ever winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Partita for 8 Voices, in which a kaleidoscopic array of vocal techniques – from humming, sighing and rhythmic effects to katajjaq (Inuit throat singing) – illuminate and decorate the structure of a Baroque suite.

Eight Songs for a Mad King is from Maxwell Davies’ maverick early years in which he sought to shock audiences and performers alike. This musical drama sees King George III imprisoned in an imaginary birdcage, in dialogue with his instrumental performers and his own demons, in one of the most daring explorations of the human voice ever created.

Classical Pride, now in its third year, exists to spotlight queer composers of the past, present and future, giving a voice and a platform to this community that has been instrumental in the development of the genre.

Classical Pride is not-for-profit. Net proceeds from concerts at Wilton’s Music Hall will be donated to three important LGBTQ+ charities – Rainbow Railroad, Terrence Higgins Trust and GAY TIMES’ Amplifund.
