Metropolis Centenary Screening with Live Score

“The mediator between head and hands must be the heart!”

Experience Fritz Lang’s nightmarish vision of the future in its full glory.

When man and machine collide, what is left of humanity? Underneath the glistening tiles  of the perfect city lies a secret which one wealthy resident will soon discover, making him question the price of his fellow citizen’s luxury.

One hundred years after its first release, Metropolis remains one of cinema’s defining visions: a monumental fusion of science fiction, expressionism and social drama whose images continue to shape the way we imagine the future. To mark its centenary, The Lucky Dog Picturehouse presents a special screening of Lang’s landmark film accompanied by pianist Tom Marlow and percussionist Nicholas Ball, bringing new energy and immediacy to this extraordinary silent masterpiece.

Metropolis‘ towering cityscapes, mechanical workers and unforgettable imagery have become part of the visual language of modern popular culture, influencing generations of filmmakers, artists and musicians. A century on, its themes of technology, inequality, power and humanity feel remarkably prescient.

The Lucky Dog Picturehouse has built a reputation for bringing classic cinema to life through distinctive screenings, live performance and engaging introductions. Its previous work has included performances for BFI Southbank, appearances at the Loco Film Festival, and lectures at Manchester University, reflecting a longstanding commitment to presenting film history as a living, shared experience.

Experience this powerful work of art whose vision still resonates — and whose message can be rediscovered anew.
