Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929) is a landmark of British cinema: a tense, stylish thriller that finds suspense in guilt, desire, chance and the ever-present threat of exposure.
Alice White (Anny Ondra) plays a young Londoner whose night out takes a terrifying turn when she kills a man in self-defence. But the danger doesn’t end there. A witness discovers the truth and begins to blackmail her, while Alice’s boyfriend, a Scotland Yard detective, finds himself caught between duty and love.
Made at the dawn of the sound era, Blackmail exists in both silent and sound versions, and Hitchcock’s extraordinary visual storytelling remains at its heart. From the London streets and Underground to the film’s unforgettable pursuit through the British Museum, this is Hitchcock experimenting with the language of cinema and laying the groundwork for the suspense films that would follow.
For this special screening, The Lucky Dog Picturehouse presents Blackmail with a live piano score, bringing a new immediacy and atmosphere to Hitchcock’s early masterpiece. Experience the shadows, silences and suspense as they were meant to be felt.
A classic thriller. A landmark film. A night of live cinema.
