An opera bouffe by Oscar Straus, based on Bernard Shaw’s play: Arms and the Man.
Following our hugely popular semi-staging of The Arcadians at Wilton’s, Opera della Luna presents a rehearsed reading of another Edwardian classic.
When Oscar Straus approached George Bernard Shaw for permission to turn his play Arms and the Man into a comic opera, he was refused. Shaw forbade Straus and his librettist to use any of his characters’ names, or any of his dialogue, and refused to accept any royalties. He did however allow the story to be re-told.
Financially it was a very unwise move as the opera bouffe went on to earn far more at the box office than the play ever has.
The works of George Bernard Shaw went out of copyright last year, and this will be the first performance at which Shaw’s dialogue can be used in the staging of the operetta. Its hit song, “My Hero”, is still regularly performed today.
